Kicking off his career on Channel V, American born Taiwanese singer, rapper and actor Wilber Pan is a celebrity with a near cult-like following across China which made him the perfect choice for the massive concert setting of BBH Shanghai's Nestea – Ice Rush Rockstar TVC.

"Will Pan was exactly the right artist for our target audience. He has the right mix of East and West influence, which in a way reflects the way the kids in the street view the brand - an international brand deeply entrenched in China. The shoot itself was technically challenging. We had the good fortune of having Damian the CD from the BMD VFX team present at the shoot, working closely with the director and I, making sure that whatever that we shot can be followed through in post production." Commented BBH Shanghai Associate Creative Director Kelly Pon.

Shot in KL, Malaysia by Velocity Films in front of a crowd of 300 extras, the BMD VFX team used crowd multiplication techniques to swell the audience to an impressive 10,000 strong throng of screaming fans. As the concert location was to be kept fairly generic the BMD team also created a matte painting of a New York Central Park style city skyscape to composite into the backgrounds of the audience scenes.

Cutting the spot was BMD Senior Editor Pang Wei Fong, "The were a lot of subtle timing issues to consider in the edit to effectively tell the story and get the messaging across. First we established the live concert atmosphere, then the shock and comic timing of the audience reaction to Wilber as his lips and tongue are frozen, then changed the pace to Wilber's new Ice Rush cool rap."

Aside from CGI elements such as ice cubes and lemon slices that fly around the pack, one of the biggest challenges was to create, track and animated the icy frost effects that form on Wilber's face and clothing after his first sip of Nestea – Ice Rush,

"To make the ice look realistic we paid careful attention to the source light in the live plates to make sure the reflections and refractions we created in the ice matched. We also created a CG body double of Wilber to help us achieve the interaction between Wilber and the ice and also animated pieces of ice colliding with each other as they fell for further realism." Explained BMD Senior 3D Artist Chin Chia Choon.

Concluded Director Gordon Clark, "From a technical point of view what made the shoot a success was that there was a lot of pre planning to overcome any challenges that arose whilst the professionalism of Blackmagic more than made this project a great experience."
